In 'Ikigai,' Maren Emiko Elardo presents her directorial debut, drawing inspiration from her mother's childhood experiences. Taking place in the mid-1970s, the film introduces Mayumi, a young Japanese American girl, as she navigates her first week of third grade in a predominantly white school. Against this backdrop, Mayumi's mother plans a surprise classroom visit.
